How to Tile your Kitchen Backsplash

Kitchen Backsplash

One of the easiest and least expensive ways to update the appearance of your kitchen is to install a decorative tile backsplash. A tile backsplash is very practical since it?s so easy to clean and stands up well over time. Installing a tile backsplash is also something that you can do yourself without having to pay a high-priced remodeling contractor. Tile prices are varied from cheap to high end, so you can find tile that fits into your budget.

Here?s how you can transform your kitchen backsplash with tile:

Start with a good plan.

Measure (in inches) the length of your countertops and the height from counters to cabinets. Multiply length times height, divide by 144 and you have your square feet. Add 5% for waste and you know how many square feet of tile to buy. Also measure any open-ended walls where you need trim tile with a finished edge.

Gather your installation tools and supplies

- Tile glue

- Grout

- Tile Cutter or Wet Saw

- V-notch Trowel

- Rubber Grout Float

- Water Bucket

- Sponges

- Tape Measure

- Builder?s Paper

- Screwdriver

Prep Your Space for Tile

Clean off your countertops and cover them with builder?s paper or an old sheet. Remove all outlet covers, and loosen the screws holding the outlets in place so a tile will slide behind the tabs.

Check Your Layout

Lay out some tiles dry on a flat surface in your planned design. Make sure your design fits into the space and that any decorative border or inserts won?t interfere with the outlets.

Ready? Set -Tile!

Covering about 2 feet at a time, spread tile glue on the wall with the trowel. Press tile firmly in place. Use tile spacers for consistent grout joints. When you have your backsplash walls tiled, let it dry overnight and grout the following day. Tighten the outlet screws and replace the covers.

Now you have a beautiful tile backsplash that transforms the look of your entire kitchen. Good for you!
